Libraries have long been safe spaces for vulnerable populations and resources for health information. Now the US is in the midst of an opioid epidemic, and library staff are increasingly asked to respond. The Healthy Library Initiative, a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania and community partners, documented that 12% of public libraries across Pennsylvania experienced drug overdoses on-site last year. The Healthy Library Initiative and colleagues at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health will demonstrate concrete actions you can take to help combat the opioid crisis and prevent fatal overdoses, including recognizing and treating opioid overdoses with naloxone (Narcan).

Broken and unwanted electronics are collected from library staff, resulting in a low-cost programming idea.

Presenter will offer tips on finding the right book for your patrons regardless of your own reading habits. Even if you haven’t read the latest fantasy epic or haven’t tried YA since you were a teen yourself, you can learn to listen to your patrons’ book preferences, find more relevant details, do better searches, and use tools you have at hand to find a broader base of books to recommend. Also, will discuss how to help patrons read more diversely and out of their comfort zones… and why you should too!.
