Culinary Literacy 101: A How to for Your Library

Join librarians from the Culinary Literacy Center and learn how to advance multiple literacies through cooking. We?ll share how to launch a cooking program in a library from the ground up and the nuts and bolts of running a kitchen classroom. Key topics include: Building a Kitchen, Funding, Safety & Regulations, Partnerships, and Programming. BONUS e-resource: the Toolkit for Public Libraries tells our story and highlights best practices for bringing Culinary Literacy to your library.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Know the four basic food safety guidelines, how to learn more about their city?s regulations, and how to train staff to keep their community safe 2: Understand how the Free Library defines culinary literacy and how to establish partnerships with community organizations and within their local food scene 3: Be able to build a kitchen in a box and start making the case for culinary literacy in their libraries

Liz Fitzgerald is the Administrator of the Culinary Literacy Center. In 2016, Liz was named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal. She has an MLIS from Rutgers University and a BA from Loyola University.

Suzanna Urminska is the CLC?s Library Coordinator. Urminska and Fitzgerald are recipients of the 2018 Social Innovation Award. Urminska has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA from Yale University, and an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh.
