(Re)Building Latina/o Outreach: Steps to Engaging Your Community

Community outreach is challenging. And now, perhaps more than any time in recent memory, it is important for libraries to support their Latina/o population. Given this dichotomy, and using the Evanston (IL) Public Library as a case study, the speaker will present steps libraries and library staff can take to start building their Latina/o community outreach initiatives. Handouts and resources will be shared and highlighted.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Construct an Latina/o outreach outline in order to effectively plan their community engagement 2: Identify national resources that support Latina/o populations in order to improve reference and reader's services 3: Identify challenges and opportunities within their own communities in order to address community needs

Miguel Ruiz is the Latino Engagement Librarian at Evanston Public Library where he provides services and programming to the library's and the city's growing Latina/o population. His experience includes leadership in information literacy, multicultural resources and diversity and inclusivity initiatives. He specifically engages with the community, holistically, in order to provide equitable access to cultural, intellectual, technological and information resources.
