No Strings Attached: Preparing for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Private Funding

With limited local support and federal funding under threat, corporate donations seem an easy way to enhance the library’s budget. However, library administrators must consider the ethics and implications of accepting corporate donations: What if the corporation wants something in return, or is involved in scandal? Participants will leave this interactive session with key policy considerations and tools for determining whether the library’s values, goals, and services complement those of the corporations in their communities.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Be able to identify practical and ethical pitfalls in accepting private donations. 2: Develop policy statements that will guide donor agreements. 3: Understand strategies for attracting corporate donors.

Angela Stanley currently serves as Director of Georgia HomePLACE for the Georgia Public Library Service. Previously she worked as Head of Archives and Special Collections at the Athens Regional Library System, and as a Senior Librarian at the New York Public Library. Stanley has her MLS and certificate in Archives, Preservation and Records Management from Queens College, as well as her Digital Archives Specialist certification from the Society of American Archivists.

Jennifer Lautzenheiser was named Director of Middle Georgia Regional Library (MGRL) in early 2015. Jennifer began working in libraries following service in the military, corporate, and nonprofit sectors. She is dedicated to developing community partnerships which allow the library to serve more of the population with efficiency and effectiveness. Jennifer was a Laura Bush "Librarians Build Community" Fellow at Valdosta State University and the 2016 Public Librarian of the Year for the State of Georgia.
