Library Fandom: Collaborative Collections, Programs, and Spaces

Are you using pop culture to enrich library services and reach new audiences? Participants are invited to glean fandom basics and upcoming trends to create enticing marketing, collections, displays, and events for all ages. Prepare to discover fandoms popular in your own backyard as well as what’s on the horizon. Provided programming guides include: Harry Potter Iron Chef Challenge, Hannibal recipe booklist, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Library display, Sherlock scavenger hunt, and Stranger Things trivia.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Gain a rich understanding of fandom, the opportunities for unique library programming it affords, and how to collaborate with passionate members of the community to enrich library services 2: Create at least one interactive, intergenerational library fandom event for their library. 3: Apply provided materials and new knowledge to connect their communities through fandom at the library

Sam Helmick is a Public Services Librarian at Burlington Public Library and Iowa's current American Library Association Councilor. Sam is the author of Social Mobile Marketing in Libraries. As an 2016 ALA Emerging Leader, Sam developed evergreen content for YALSA social media channels and serves on the Public Awareness Committee which developed the #LibrariesTransform Campaign. Sam enjoys instructing social media marketing courses and 5K training in her spare time.
