Building Meaningful Relationships Through Community Engagement

Community engagement is the art of connecting local resources with the residents they serve. Librarians for community engagement are always on the move, working with local institutions and learning about the needs of their community members. In this interactive session, the presenters will share insights from their work developing successful partnerships outside the library. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own successes and brainstorm ways to do the same for their own communities.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Be able to build an asset map by identifying community resources and institutions and potential connections between them 2: Know how to form and maintain sustainable, productive partnerships 3: Understand methods for embedding the library in the fabric and minds of their community

Maggie Killman, Youth Community Engagement Librarian

Maggie Killman has her Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has been working in public libraries for five years with experience in both Adult and Youth Services. Maggie's passion is connecting with community partners to develop fun and innovative programming.
Gabriel Venditti, Community Engagement Librarian
Shaker Heights Public Library , Shaker Heights , OH
Gabriel Venditti has his MLIS from Kent State University. In addition to 14 years working in libraries, he was also the Project Manager for Public Square Group, Inc., as well as other community focused positions and experiences. Along with city officials, Gabriel co-facilitates a monthly Neighbor Night meeting designed to empower residents and bring their ideas to the forefront. He also hosts Coffee and Conversation, highlighting resident stories and facilitating free-flowing conversation.
