The next generation of libraries takes risks and fosters leaders of change at all levels. Building a culture of learning is the critical link that drives innovation and engagement. Pickering (ON) Public Library shares their success story of becoming a learning organization. In this session, participants will obtain practical tools and collaboratively discuss top strategies to assist library leaders in transforming their libraries into learning organizations.

At the end of this session, participants will:

1: Share experiences and discuss with peers what it means to be a learning organization (or a learning library) 2: Examine and come away with a tool kit of practical learning organization activities that can be used to help their library become a learning organization 3: Identify and develop learning culture strategies that are suited to their individual workplaces

Tanya Sinclair is the Deputy CEO/Director of HR at Pickering Public Library in Ontario, Canada. She has over a decade of experience working in libraries, combined with 20 years in the Human Resources field. Tanya is passionate about learning and is always looking for news ways to engage staff. Sabrina Yung is the Manager of Community Engagement at Pickering Public Library in Ontario, Canada. With an education background as a secondary school educator combined with over 15 years of recreation management expertise, Sabrina is an advocate for literacy and access to learning for all ages.

Christy Harper, Manager of Technology Services
Pickering Public Library , Pickering , ON

Christy Harper is the Manager of Technology Services at Pickering Public Library in Ontario, Canada. She has worked in various management roles for the last five years and is a technology enthusiast. Christy has a passion for learning and was instrumental in piloting a mobile "library without walls" with the introduction of the Pickering Public Library Connect Vehicle and wi-fi hotspot lending program.

Elaine Knox, Client Services Specialist
Pickering Public Library , Pickering , ON

Elaine Knox is currently the Youth Client Service Specialist at the Pickering Public Library, has completed her education at Ryerson University, attaining a Bachelor of Social Work Degree. Elaine is passionate about implementation and execution of new and relevant youth projects and initiatives. She takes a very serious stance on being a mentor to the next generation of individuals, and believes learning happens at all levels, at every stage of life.

Cancellation Policy

The PLA 2018 Conference is offered on a cost-recovery basis. PLA reserves the right to cancel all or any part of this event if there is insufficient registration or for other reasons. Neither ALA nor PLA is responsible for cancellation charges assessed by the airlines or travel agencies, or other losses incurred due to the cancellation of the workshops. All information listed on this website is subject to change.

Attendee Cancellation Policy

Written cancellations, requests for refunds, and/or changes will be accepted until February 23, 2018, and are subject to a $30 handling fee. Refunds will be processed after April 23, 2018. According to PLA policy, all meal events require preregistration. The above cancellation/change information also applies to all preconferences, meal events, and tours. No meal tickets will be sold onsite.

Exhibitor Cancellation Policy

All booth space cancellation requests must be received in writing by Show Management (Corcoran Expositions). If space is reduced, the net reduction of space will be treated as a cancellation of that space. If Show Management receives a written request for cancellation of space on or before October 31, 2017, the exhibitor will be eligible for a refund less the nonrefundable deposit of $950 per 100 square feet of exhibit space. For cancellations received after October 31, 2017, exhibitors are liable for 100% of the cost of space.
