Friday, March 23, 2018, 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM
Pennsylvania Convention Center, 201 ABC
Too often the best library programs never reach the kids most in need. We may be from Iowa, but we know that “if you build it, they will come” isn’t always true. So we found a way to go to them. Discover how the Cedar Rapids (IA) Public Library moved beyond its walls to reach children with barriers to traditional library access through strategic partnerships and volunteer support. Adapt this award-winning program to fit your community.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Identify organizations to build partnerships with that meet specific criteria: mission alignment, target audience, poverty mapping, food deserts, school proficiency scores, and free and reduced lunch program participation rates. 2: Build a framework for adapting onsite library resources to take outside of the library: collection management, volunteers, activities, crafts, requested materials, and tracking systems.Develop volunteer duties to assist library staff in efficiently and economically implementing outreach.< 3: Develop volunteer duties to assist library staff in efficiently and economically implementing outreach.
