Talking is Teaching: Opportunities for Increasing Early Brain and Language Development

Thursday, March 22, 2018, 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM

Pennsylvania Convention Center, 109 AB

Everyday interactions such as talking, reading, and singing strengthen early brain development. Libraries are uniquely positioned to support and equip parents and caregivers with tools to be their child’s first teachers. Too Small to Fail and the San Francisco Public Library will present opportunities and share materials on how to best engage families in language-rich activities so that more of America’s children are prepared for success – both in school and in life.

At the end of this session, participants will:

1: Be able to teach parents, grandparents and caregivers how to use simple, everyday interactions such as talking, reading, and singing to strengthen children's early brain development 2: Understand the benefits and successes of a partnership between the San Francisco Public Library system and Too Small to Fail's Talking is Teaching campaign, including introducing new families to library services and resources 3: Understand the partnership opportunities available to their local libraries in developing a targeted Talking is Teaching campaign in their community

The session organizer(s) identified this session as appropriate for:
Level 1: People with no previous knowledge of the topic.

This session will have: Medium interaction (example: single speaker/panel with questions or discussion throughout)
