Turning Common Heritage into Common History: Preserving Local African American History

Learn how the Athens-Clarke County (GA) Library’s Heritage Room worked with the local African-American community to preserve its history through digitizing family records. Library staff worked with community leaders to rally support for the project, which included scanning days using equipment funded by an NEH grant. They will present the outcome of this year-long project showing that a public library and its community can turn common heritage into common history by working together.
At the end of this session, participants will:
1: Know how to build relationships for effective community outreach and participation 2: Understand that the success of a project like this is dependent upon an efficient and detailed project plan 3: Understand how and why to make donated digital material available to the public

Valerie Bell is the executive director of the Athens Regional Library System, which covers five Northeast Georgia counties with 11 library branches. Valerie is a leader who specializes in customer service and community outreach. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2011 NAACP Community Leader of the Year. A proponent of diversity and inclusion, Valerie has served on a number of ALA?s committees and on Council.
Angela Stanley, Director of Georgia HomePLACE

Angela Stanley currently serves as Director of Georgia HomePLACE for the Georgia Public Library Service. Previously she worked as Head of Archives and Special Collections at the Athens Regional Library System, and as a Senior Librarian at the New York Public Library. Stanley has her MLS and certificate in Archives, Preservation and Records Management from Queens College, as well as her Digital Archives Specialist certification from the Society of American Archivists.

Rhiannon Eades is the public information officer for the Athens Regional Library System. She is passionate about telling library success stories. Rhiannon has experience in emergency communication planning, healthcare marketing and journalism.
