The array of professional development programs are the highlight of PLA Conference. Over 100 programs—including preconferences and concurrent session programs—will challenge attendees to imagine new possibilities in their libraries and communities.   Calgary Public Library has transformed its oldest branch into an arts & culture hub for Millennials. The Library is now home to the local literary organization, amateur musician ensembles, and a “CreateSpace” – an interactive experiment in community-building. It has also become a testing ground for new services: Millennials drop-in for “nerd out at the library” programs, browse the “book candy aisle,” and take home extra books from the “bonus hold” cabinet.

  Pima County (AZ) Public Library (PCPL) has radically shifted its approach toward interacting with youth in violation of the library’s Customer Code of Conduct. Using restorative justice practices, PCPL created a justice board with community partners to facilitate more mindful approaches to incidents involving youth, focusing on creating opportunities for growth and engagement rather than barriers to library access. This program explores the praxis behind this organizational culture shift including the successes and challenges faced by staff.
